Who We Are
Our team brings a combination of targeted experience and deep knowledge of the field. In addition, our partners and advisers bring deep expertise with the donor and funder communities, and offer particular expertise that enhances our ability to provide a full range of services and solutions to philanthropic organizations with whom we work.
Jim Bildner, Managing Director
Jim Bildner is Managing Director of the Center for Applied Philanthropy and The Fund for Sustainability. He is also a trustee of The Kresge Foundation, The Non Profit Finance Fund, Case Western Reserve University, Lesley University, The National Public Radio Foundation, The Literary Ventures Fund, The Trustees of the Reservation, The Lizard Island Research Foundation in Australia and on the board of the Good Deed Foundation and the McCue Corporation. He has newly joined the board of the Women's Funding Network as its first male board member. He is also an Overseer of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and a member of the executive council of WBUR (Boston Public Radio) and Chairman of its Board of Overseers and an Overseer of WGBH Public TV and Radio. In his board service, Mr. Bildner serves on the Investment Committees of boards with aggregate endowments in excess of $6B and serves as chair or a member of the finance and audit committees of four boards.
A frequent lecturer and speaker on venture philanthropy and literature, Jim is also an Adjunct Professor of Law at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, the Humanities and Literature Departments’ Entrepreneur in Residence at Clark University and an Adjunct Professor of Writing in the Humanities Department at Lesley University. Mr. Bildner has written numerous articles, op-ed pieces and commentaries for newspapers, magazines and radio including NPR’s Morning Edition, The Boston Globe, The Boston Globe Sunday Magazine, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Hampshire Daily Gazette and Inc. Magazine. Mr. Bildner earned his AB from Dartmouth College, his J.D. from Case Western Reserve School of Law and his M.F.A. from Lesley University.
Andrea E McGrath, Director
Andrea E McGrath is the Director of the Center for Applied Philanthropy. Andrea has developed a broad perspective of the field of social enterprise and innovation through her work as a researcher and consultant for nonprofits, venture funds, think tanks and academic institutions in the United States and the United Kingdom. As a consultant, Andrea focused primarily on business development and planning, feasibility studies, project management and recruitment. Her projects and research interests have investigated field-based efforts to scale innovation through improved collaboration among the sectors, increased social investments and the development of a robust social capital marketplace. Her research has been driven by issues critical to scaling impact, including examinations of ‘capital’ needs in the field (knowledge, human, financial) and how policy changes and collaborations between social enterprise and government. Andrea has collaborated with centers of social enterprise at Duke University, Yale University, Harvard Business School, and the Harvard Kennedy School on a variety of projects. She has also presented and led study groups at on Mission Investments and the Social Capital Marketplace.
Andrea serves on the board of the MicroLoan Foundation USA and the Center for Social Philanthropy. She serves as an adviser and mentor to students at Harvard Kennedy School, Boston College, and Year Up. Andrea began her career in fundraising, then earned an MBA and joined a global Fortune 500 financial services organization, where she worked as a senior consultant and project manager in operations, worldwide marketing, and global competitive intelligence. Andrea earned a BA from Boston College, MBA from the University of Connecticut, and MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
