Strategic Advisory: NONPROFITS

The Center for Applied Philanthropy (CAP) is working with nonprofit organizations to help them understand, structure, and implement Program Related Investment (PRI) strategies. Nonprofits today are confronting the dual challenges of decreased philanthropic and government funding at a time of sharply increasing client and societal needs. They also increasingly lack access to critical working capital that covers the gap between the commitment and receipt of funds, or allows them to sustain or expand their programmatic activities.

Given these challenges, more nonprofits are seeking to better understand how best to utilize ‘nontraditional’ capital  - in the form of lines of credit, zero-to-low interest loans, loan guarantees, and other forms of PRIs to provide the critical resources they need. These types of PRIs and other ‘nontraditional’ funding can provide an important source of critically needed capital to nonprofits – thus it is increasingly urgent for nonprofits to better understand where PRI strategies could work best, how they can structure and implement these investments, and how they can develop the relevant capacity to manage and repay PRIs going forward.

CAP helps nonprofits to evaluate their organization’s capacity and readiness for PRI funding, identify PRI opportunities, and structure and implement PRI investments. CAP helps identify required resources, build capacity and transfer knowledge on each engagement. CAP also works with a select number of nonprofits that are ‘investment ready’ on their fundraising to attract and secure PRI funding.  From evaluation to placement, CAP is focused on expanding the use and adoption of PRI and other mission investments. Specifically, our services include:

  • Evaluation and Due Diligence
  • Structure and Implementation
  • Funding Strategies
    • Co-funding, Syndication
