A Solution Whose Time Has Come
The Center for Applied Philanthropy (CAP) believes that NOW IS THE TIME for 'nontraditional capital' - structured as loans and other Program Related Investments (PRIs) - to emerge as an investment solution whose time has come. Just as investors in the traditional capital markets have been rethinking their investment strategies - foundations, donors, and nonprofit organizations have also found themselves at a critical reflection point.
CAP sees an important opportunity for PRI strategies to help foundations and nonprofits move beyond their dependence on traditional grant making strategies, and consider the enormous opportunity of more innovative financing that can leverage the programmatic activities of non profits and drive more sustainable programmatic outcomes. Encouragingly - we have seen increasing interest in PRI strategies from those with whom we’ve worked and connected.
That said, we do worry that this could be an opportunity lost if the discussion and consideration of PRI strategies does not evolve to greater application. CAP is committed to that evolution and we will continue - through our client and field building activities - to work with our partners, networks, and the philanthropic community towards the broader adoption of Program Related Investment (PRI) and other mission investment strategies.
