Background information
College presents a new set of academic, social and personal challenges for all students. Even the brightest and most talented youth may struggle with college if they do not have adequate support, financial resources and opportunities to enable them to focus on their education. The Janey Scholars Program was developed in 1999 by an individual to help talented, hard-working and motivated low-income students from Boston to achieve their greatest potential in college and in their chosen career path. The goal is to ensure that limited financial resources do not limit students’ potential to achieve in college.
The Janey Scholars Program works closely with students to provide targeted financial and social supports that will help them excel academically, and dream and plan for a meaningful career post-college.
- In its first year the Janey Scholars Program worked with 4 students.
- Today, in our 13th year, the program supports 58 students (undergraduates and graduate students), primarily from Boston public schools.
- These students attend highly competitive colleges and universities, including Boston College, Boston University, Brown University, Cornell University, Harvard University, Tufts, NYU and Brandeis.
- 81 students have graduated from the Janey Scholars Program.
- The Janey Scholars Program is funded by an individual donor. The Philanthropic Initiative (TPI) administers the program on behalf of this donor.
- In addition to financial support, each student is paired with a mentor, who provides support and guidance and facilitates access to available resources.
