There are multiple ways to look at leadership including a handful of theoretical frameworks that help describe what it is and how it works. We can list the characteristics that leaders share and compare the conditions that enable leaders to emerge and to excel. In Sleepwalkers, an essay on citizen action, Peter Karoff, describes leadership as "the secret sauce" of bold philanthropy and the source for ensuring the continuation of an equitable, democratic society. In light of the challenges that confront us today, Karoff puzzles over why so few step forward to lead real change.
