The Fund for Sustainability
A PRI investment fund targeting working capital needs of nonprofits and social enterprises
The Fund for Sustainability (TFS) is a special purpose investment program that deploys 'nontraditional' capital - structured as loans or program related investments (PRIs) - to drive more sustainable programmatic outcomes for nonprofit organizations. TFS' investments target critical working capital and programmatic expansion needs among nonprofits and social enterprises whose core focus is domestic health and human services, arts and culture, the environment or education. Within these sectors, TFS has a bias to fund nonprofits whose mission focuses on underserved populations who have historically lacked access to non-traditional forms of capital or philanthropic dollars. Some examples of TFS' investments might include:
- Providing the critical upfront capital to a community health center to hire additional physicians who can expand the center's programmatic reach and revenues
- Supporting the working capital needs of a community workforce program to increase its outreach to expand their job network base and placement opportunities
- Providing the critical bridge capital to cover the gap between funds committed from a donor source and funds received by the organization
- Providing the program expansion capital to an urban arts organization to allow them to add new productions or build new audiences for their existing programs and activities
