"Reinvention" of a Family Foundation

TPI and Family PhilanthropyUpon the death of the donor, a family foundation grew in size from about $2 million to $20 million in assets.

Recognizing this opportunity to have a greater impact, and to involve more family members in a meaningful way, the new trustees asked TPI to help them develop a giving plan, set up an inclusive governance and decision-making structure, and support the trustees as they learned about foundation operations and strategic giving. Through a series of family retreats, TPI helped them develop a strategy that included three focus areas. In addition, TPI supported trustees in a "discovery" process where they learned more about the needs and opportunities in their focus areas. Family members who were not trustees were invited to be part of the learning and review process and become prepared for the possibility of becoming trustees in the future. TPI acted as professional staff for the "reinvented" foundation until a family member was prepared to take on these responsibilities.
