CVS Innovations Grants Program

For over a decade – from 1991-2002 - the CVS Innovations Grants Program provided support to schools in 11 states and D.C. for locally-based school initiatives aimed at improving learning opportunities for all students.  The decision to sponsor a school improvement initiative grew out of a strategic planning process that TPI facilitated for the Corporation, which resulted in a decision to invest in improving the ability of our nation’s public schools to educate students who can meet the demands of our nation’s economy, and to do so directly in communities in which CVS does business.

Through a competitive Request for Proposals process, designed by TPI, 36 schools were selected to receive multi-year grants.  All grantees also benefited from ongoing technical assistance from educational consultants and regular opportunities to network with educators from schools around the country in CVS-supported conferences.  The program was deliberately designed to provide meaningful opportunities for interested CVS employees to get involved, including participating in selecting grantee schools and working on-site with individual schools on issues such as “Creative Problem Solving” and “Marketing the Concept of School Change”.

The CVS Innovations Grants Program was awarded “Best of Class” prize by the Conference Board in 1998.  An independent evaluation of the initiative said that the program “…has made a contribution to current concepts of restructuring.” The evaluators praised the approach the program took to school improvement:  “By focusing on an innovation they have chosen to pursue, schools also work on the structure of the school and the instructional program, a significant accomplishment.”
