Broader Engagement

The infrastructure to encourage and support global giving, along with opportunities to develop learning and create partnerships, remains limited. TPI’s global center works to promote and support broader engagement in international giving and, in partnership with local organizations, promote and strengthen giving in other countries.  Through a range of programs, workshops, educational offerings, and infrastructure-building efforts in the United States and elsewhere, TPI is inspiring greater numbers of donors to engage – and engage more deeply – in truly effective philanthropy.

TPI’s efforts to broaden participation and engagement include:

New England International Donors (ongoing) - TPI is providing leadership and coordination to this newly established group that aims to increase the quality and quantity of international philanthropy from New England.

Philanthropy in Ireland and Northern Ireland (2010) - In collaboration with the U.S. State Department and the Irish Institute at Boston College, TPI helped donors, professional advisors and community leaders understand and strengthen the systems and culture needed to more fully realize the potential of private philanthropy.

Community Foundation Global Giving Initiative (CF-GGI) (ongoing) - With a consortium of community foundations and funding from the Council on Foundations and the Seattle International Foundation, CF-GGI is exploring the potential benefit and design of a central hub that would allow community foundations to more effectively address their donors’ international interests. As the project consultant, TPI is leading the research and design of the initiative.

Private Philanthropy in China - TPI partners with several China-based organizations to promote and strengthen philanthropy in the country. Recent efforts include:

Family Philanthropy in China (2009) - Working with a major Hong Kong-based family foundation committed to the growth of strategic family philanthropy in China, TPI helped to design and execute a three-day symposium for regional family donors seeking to increase the impact of their giving.

Strategic Philanthropy in China (2009) - In partnership with the Hauser Center at Harvard University, TPI designed and led a workshop on strategic philanthropy for a delegation of philanthropic leaders from China.

China Private Philanthropy Forum (2009) - In conjunction with the first annual China Private Philanthropy Forum in Beijing, TPI helped present a workshop on strategic philanthropy for approximately 80 leaders from China’s government and private philanthropy sector.

"Foundation School" (2008-10) - At a series of global workshops convened by the Charities Aid Foundation, TPI designed and led sessions on strategic, high impact and venture philanthropy. Venues included Brazil, Germany, and Hong Kong.

Chilean Donor Summit (2008) - In partnership with the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, TPI convened over two dozen influential families from Chile for two days of discussion on wealth, legacy, civil society, and high impact giving in Chile. This highly energized community has built on this workshop to promote and strengthen
philanthropy in the country.

Strategic Social Investment: Challenges and Opportunities in Colombia (2006) - TPI was retained by Give to Colombia, a US-based public charity committed to encouraging and facilitating diaspora giving by Colombians in the US, to assist in the design and delivery of a conference on achieving greater impact and reach in diaspora giving.

Philanthropy in Mexico (2005) - With Procura, Mexico’s principal NGO capacity-building organization, TPI helped design and facilitate a conference to encourage accountability and transparency in Mexico’s non-profit and philanthropic sectors.

Philanthropic Leadership and Development in Asia (2004-05) - With support from the Hewlett Foundation, TPI assisted the Asia Pacific Philanthropy Consortium (APPC) with a study of the philanthropic philosophies and practices among high–net worth individuals in six Asian countries (Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Thailand) and explore strategies to promote and support philanthropy among high-net-worth individuals in the region.

Global Philanthropy Promotion: New Audiences, New Approaches, New Applications (2004) - TPI assisted with the design and development of this Bertelsmann Foundation workshop, and coordinated the conference in partnership with CEMEFI. The conference brought together 35 global leaders from the philanthropic sector to explore promising strategies to promote greater giving around the globe.

International Network on Strategic Philanthropy (INSP) (2002-2004) - INSP was a two-year initiative of the Bertelsmann Foundation and other European and U.S. foundations providing a forum for 60 global philanthropic leaders and experts to build and disseminate knowledge to improve the practice of philanthropy around the world. TPI was a member of the coordinating committee, chaired one of the Network’s four working groups, and led three specific research studies.

Capacity Building (2003) - With support from the C.S. Mott Foundation, TPI gathered 15 leaders to identify ways in which U.S. community foundations are currently involved in international giving and begin to identify the resources and strategies needed to strengthen the capacity of community foundations to respond to their donors’ interests in global giving.

Growing Philanthropy in Brazil (2001-2002) - TPI worked with the Institute for the Development of Social Investment (IDIS), to design and conduct a program to promote philanthropy in Brazil, specifically focusing on the development of family philanthropy, donor education, and the role of the professional legal and financial advisor.
