Workshops, Trainings and Presentations

Examples of 60 - 90 minute workshops

A Vision for Your Philanthropy

This workshop gives participants the opportunity to explore why vision is so important and how it can inspire and enlist others in the important and exciting work of philanthropy.  Examples of inspiring visions present a model on which to work on and create participants’ own visions.

The Philanthropic Toolbox

This workshop aims to give participants a working knowledge of the range of tools beyond grantmaking available to philanthropists, a sense of how to assess what tools are right in different circumstances, and an interest in trying new tools or strategies.

Raising Philanthropic Children

A hands-on workshop that draws on Raising Children with Philanthropic Values, by Ellen Remmer, TPI President and CEO.  Parents will share experience and receive practical guidance, perspective and action steps as they seek to encourage charitable attitudes and behavior in their children.

Succession: Involving the Next Generation

At some point in the life of a family foundation, succession becomes an issue.  This workshop encourages families to think about their goals for the future, both for the philanthropy and the family itself.  It explores the dynamics that face every family and offers models for successful succession as well as time to do individual and small group problem solving.

From Vision to Strategy: Exploring Theories of Change

The Annie E. Casey Foundation describes Theory of Change as "a clear expression of the apparent relationships between actions and hoped-for results.  It provides an explanation of the reasons why certain strategies are being used and how and in what sequence those strategies will achieve the desired change. " This workshop is designed to help participants think more strategically about their work, understand their assumptions and create a roadmap for their philanthropy.

Identifying Opportunities and Needs

This workshop explores how to successfully evaluate opportunities for philanthropic investment.  For donors new to the field, the focus might be on organizational review and site visits, while for more experienced donors, the focus is on research into an issue or community and discovering where the potential exists for the greatest impact and leverage.

Evaluating and Effectiveness

This workshop is based on Making a Difference: Evaluating Your Philanthropy by TPI’s President and CEO Ellen Remmer.  Participants will learn pragmatic and realistic approaches to evaluation, clarify the goals of evaluation – with an emphasis on collaborative learning, and find out where to go for additional resources.  It includes the opportunity to reflect on gifts that have been the most effective and most satisfying.

Interactive Technology

Tuesdays at TPI

Designed and moderated by TPI founder Peter Karoff, the Tuesdays@TPI progam is designed to engage a national audience of funders in provocative discussion of issues on the cutting edge of philanthropy. Subjects have included The Meaning of Philanthropic Leadership, Trust and Transparency: Philanthropy as Private Action in Public Space, and Public Policy, Politics and Philanthropy. Along with engaging a live audience and expert panel, the moderated discussion facilitates interaction among participants across the country through a streaming video and teleconferencing format that has included polling, live Web chat and call-in questions. Panelists have included such luminaries as Rebecca Rimel of Pew Charitable Trust, Dot Ridings of the Council on Foundations, Peter Goldmark of Rockefeller Foundation, and Peggy Dulany of The Synergos Institute.  View the video archives.
