In June, The Philanthropic Initiative hosted a stimulating conversation on "The New Paradigm of Social Movements" as part of the continued discussions surrounding many of the important themes in Peter Karoff's The World We Want book. On October 2nd, we are pleased to continue this series with a focus on "The Moral Dimension of Philanthropy and Social Action."

Legacy is an important motivator of philanthropy, and social action, but it is by no means the only one, and it is certainly not only about what we give or do.  It is also about standing up and being counted when it is important to do so.

"Philanthropy (and social action) is the primary vehicle people use to implement their moral imagination and to shape and advance the moral agenda of society" writes Robert Payton.  Yet so much of the focus in philanthropy by donors, and by nonprofit organizations, today is on the technical and on the process. Philanthropy's moral and ethical dimensions have too often been absent from the discussion, and from our work.  Those dimensions include the relationship between mission and purpose and the communities of interest being served, and the way we go about what we do.

Peter Karoff will facilitate the discussion joined by panelists John Isaacson, Managing Director of Isaacson, Mille r and Douglas (Tim) Hall, Friedman Professor in Management at Boston University School of Management. The gathering will be an opportunity to engage in dialogue with others interested in the resolution of critical social issues.

The meeting will take place from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at TPI's office at 160 Federal Street, Floor 8 in Boston.  A light lunch will be served. We would love to have your participation in this unique event.

Registration is required, so please send an email to our colleague Alicia Perry at aperry@tpi.org or call her at (617) 338-2590 by September 24 if you would like to attend.
