Date Published: February 23, 2010
Today, women are as likely as men to contribute time, expertise, and financial resources to improve communities and meet human needs across the globe. Women are changing our world through philanthropy, and are changing philanthropy in the process. Why does gender matter? How can women give strategically and create awareness about important needs?
New York Times Knowledge Network is please to offer its new course, Women and Philanthropy – The Time is Now to discuss answers to these critical questions with innovative leaders and research experts who are shaping a movement. Offered online in partnership with the Women’s Philanthropy Institute, this course includes special presentations by Jennifer Buffett and TPI’s Ellen Remmer and a panel discussion about women’s philanthropy in the 21st century with Abigail Disney, Barbara Dobkin, Hali Lee, Michele Minter, and Jackie Zehner.

In the past 30 years women have emerged on the philanthropic landscape as a visible and bold presence. They are changing the face of philanthropy and are transforming society around the world. Today’s reality is that women, strengthened by increasing economic power and education, are as likely as men to be philanthropists. This course is designed to explain why gender matters in philanthropy, to help women especially develop deliberate and strategic giving plans, and to create awareness about the need to engage donors of all demographic backgrounds in pursuit of more just and sustainable communities and the world.
All course participants will be able to engage in a live webcast to be held on March 10, 2010 from 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM EST. The interactive webcast will be streamed directly through the course and archived for later viewing. Self-paced lessons, prerecorded video, and resources are included in the course, as well as a weeklong discussion.
