Building to Grow: Internal Capacity Building for Small Foundations is the latest report from an ongoing research program of the Human Interaction Research Institute, focused on how small foundations can strengthen their grantmaking and other activities.  Funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, this study asked small foundation staff and trustees across the country two questions: (1) What "trigger points" cause small foundations to "ramp up" their internal capacity significantly over what it was before? and (2) What are some strategies small foundations can use to build internal capacity?  These questions also were asked of thought leaders in philanthropy, including TPI senior staff Leslie Pine, Ellen Remmer and Jason Born.
