event: Market and Hybrid Aproaches to Social Change Breakfast
Start Date: April 15, 2008
Since the official launch of his new book in September, Peter Karoff has been traveling around the country, speaking and leading workshops with other TPI staff as a part of the national book tour for The World We Want: New Dimensions in Philanthropy and Social Change. As a part of the continued discussions surrounding many of the important themes raised in the book, TPI is hosting a breakfast discussion on April 15 on "Market and Hybrid Approaches to Social Change." The event will comprise a panel discussion moderated by Peter, featuring Ben Binswanger, COO of the Case Foundation, and Elyse Cherry, CEO of Boston Community Capital, as well as an intimate conversation focusing on Chapter Three, Paradigms of Change. Discussion questions will include:
- What are the positive and negative results to bridging the traditional divides between the business and social sectors? How does the "entrepreneurial approach" leverage transformational change differently than traditional grants?
- Getting to scale is an argument in favor of market economy solutions to social issues. Is big-scale always a good thing?
- Is making profit from advancing the public good appropriate? Is it an oxymoron?
- Bill Drayton, founder of Ashoka, believes the division of the market economy and the citizen sector was a "historical accident." Do you agree, or are the differences more fundamental?
Our goal is to provide discussion participants with the opportunity to meet with others who are interested in the resolution of critical social issues and engage in a dialogue on the value of emerging intersections between philanthropy and the market economy.
