Start Date: May 4, 2010

The first-ever European Foundation Center (EFC) Foundation Week, running from May 31st to June 4th this year, will feature a wide variety of activities, from debates about the role of foundations in society to cultural activities and exhibitions showcasing the impact of foundation work. Taking place in Brussels and entitled ‘Foundation Week: Foundations’ Work’, the week aims to bring together foundations, corporate donors, European Union policy and decision-makers, non-profit organizations, multilaterals, think tanks, universities and members of the public to discuss key matters affecting citizens in Europe and worldwide.

Free public debates on topics as diverse as safeguarding biodiversity; developing global sustainability criteria, religious plurality and its implications for social cohesion, and challenges to peace and security will run alongside a series of exhibitions and activities illustrating the full range of foundation work. Highlights include an exhibition from Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian on the work of Charles Darwin, a wheelchair basketball game from Fundación ONCE, a photography exhibition of life inside a Ugandan refugee camp and a screening of foundation-funded documentaries.

The EFC’s Annual General Assembly and Conference will also take place during the week, from June 2-4, on the theme "a conversation with the institutions." Sessions will engage EU representatives on various challenges facing Europe, as well as the projected European Foundation Statute.
