Letter from TPI President Ellen Remmer "So here is a novel thought as we approach this busy and materialistic time of year: What if we paused, took a deep breath and conjured up an image of a better world? Mine might be a world free of pollution, injustice and nuclear arms. Yours might be a world of beauty, serenity and grace. What if - instead of talking about how frenzied we are - our holiday dinner conversations feasted upon ideas for making these images a reality?..."
An Interview with the Author TPI President Ellen Remmer interviewed Peter Karoff to learn more about his goals in writing The World We Want, what he has learned and how it relates to TPI.

The Emergence of Open Source Philanthropy Whether the issue is homelessness, education, arts, environment or poverty, philanthropy can not achieve its goals alone. While access to resources is a large concern, even more critical is the sheer complexity of solving social issues; complex problems can never solved by a single actor. One emerging solution is a shift in the role and responsibilities of various sectors, or an Open Source approach to philanthropy. Increasingly competitive and innovative nonprofits, along with social entrepreneurs like AOL, eBay and Google are breaking down silos between civil society, government and the market economy.

Think Global, Act Local Peggy Dulany, founder of The Synergos Institute and a former TPI board member, began to realize the importance of community empowerment as a teenager giving free clinic injections in Brazil, and it shaped her vision for eliminating poverty from the bottom up. "The kernel that has stuck with me and has kept me at this work through the years was that the people living in these settlements in absolutely minimal conditions have an intense desire to improve their lives and get out of poverty," she explains, "and they understand better than anyone else what the solutions are." The first step, explains Dulany, is getting the community involved.
TPI Client Spotlight The World We Want was inspired in large part by the philanthropic leaders with whom TPI has had the privilege of working over the last two decades. Their ambition, creativity and humility, and most importantly, their demonstrated positive results, have been an ongoing source of inspiration to all of us.
