Family Philanthropy and Civil Society Seminar for Chilean Leaders
TPI recently partnered with the Kennedy School of Government and the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard University to offer a seminar on issues relating to family philanthropy and civil society in Chile. Attended by over 30 of Chile’s business, religious and university leaders, the seminar covered three topics:
- Exploring the role of business leaders and their family foundations in the development of civil society in the United States with possible lessons for Chile
- Sharing practical experiences in the management of family foundations; and
- Analyzing the Chilean legal framework for philanthropy.
TPI’s President Ellen Remmer and Vice President Steve Johnson worked with Kennedy School counterparts to craft the design of the seminar and led seminar modules on (1) models of effective and high impact philanthropy, (2) giving strategically for change, for impact, for community and (3) engaging the Family – Best Practices.
The Chilean leaders reported that they were inspired by the seminar to not only take steps to improve their own philanthropy, but also to work together to strengthen civil society and the role of philanthropy in Chile. Next steps for the program are currently under development.
