Steve Johnson
Stephen P. Johnson is a Senior Fellow at The Philanthropic Initiative, Inc. (TPI). He has spent more than two decades in the field of philanthropy and has worked with TPI in a variety of capacities since joining the firm in1998. His work focuses primarily on assisting families, foundations, and corporations define and achieve their strategic philanthropic objectives worldwide. He was a principal author of the code of ethics for philanthropy advisors.
Steve also works to advance the scope and quality of philanthropy in the U.S. and abroad. For more than a decade he has been engaged in groundbreaking work to study, understand, and improve the philanthropy-related practice of legal and financial advisors. For more than two decades Steve has served as the managing trustee of his family’s foundation, which serves the people and the environment of the Lake Champlain Basin and focuses on the needs of children and families, access to quality education, and the health of the Basin’s water and lands. Prior to joining TPI, he spent 20 years in law, public policy, education, and long-range planning. As a lawyer he worked in corporate litigation, as counsel to the U.S. Senate, as a government-relations professional, and with justice reform commissions around the country. He has taught both undergraduate and law students, and has written and spoken extensively on public policy and the future of the justice system and the legal profession.
Steve has served on numerous non-profit and town government boards, among them Associated Grant Makers of Massachusetts, Massachusetts Citizens for Children, and Shelburne Farms, and he was a member of the steering committee of Giving New England, a four-state philanthropy promotion collaborative funded by New Ventures in Philanthropy. Steve is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (BA, 1974, magna cum laude) and the University of Virginia School of Law (JD, 1979). He and his wife, Paula – also a philanthropy professional – have three children. They live in Charlotte, Vermont and Lincoln, Massachusetts.
