Transformation through Philanthropy

Published by The Philanthropic Initiative
A lively discussion among philanthropic leaders on the subject of "Transformational Philanthropy" could easily span several forums and spark a series of dialogues. The Meaning of Leadership - A Tuesdays@TPI Forum

Published by The Philanthropic Initiative
There are multiple ways to look at leadership including a handful of theoretical frameworks that help describe what it is and how it works. We can list the characteristics that leaders share and compare the conditions that enable leaders to emerge and to excel. In Sleepwalkers, an essay on citizen action, Peter Karoff, describes leadership as "the secret sauce" of bold philanthropy and the source for ensuring the continuation of an equitable, democratic society. In light of the challenges that confront us today, Karoff puzzles over why so few step forward to lead real change.

On the Issue of Trust

Published by The Philanthropic Initiative
Peter Karoff's essay "On the Issue of Trust" explores the impact and potential consequences for philanthropy in light of society’s diminishing trust in its institutions. It also provided the background and context for a provocative Tuesdays@TPI forum, Trust and Transparency: Philanthropy as Private Action in Public Space. At a time when philanthropy is increasingly a subject of scrutiny and criticism by the media and the government, when trust in its institutions is at its nadir,TPI concluded that this forum and a special issue of Initiatives were both important and timely.

Public Policy, Politics & Philanthropy

Published by The Philanthropic Initiative
Philanthropy is only one player among many in the ongoing effort to shape our communities and our world. And as much as donors can accomplish on their own, we cannot ignore the critical role government plays in almost any issue we embrace. Whether it’s school reform, the environment, human services, or community development - what government does or does not do is a huge factor in the equation of what can be done to address critical social issues.

This issue of Initiatives explores poverty and homelessness in the U.S.

Views: Tactile Philanthropy

This article by Peter Karoff appeared in the Chronicle of Philanthropy and reflects upon the issue of philanthropy needing measurable "impact," meaning that grants should produce documented results and certifiable outcomes.

Sounding the Call for Philanthropy

Published by The Philanthropic Initiative
Phenomena such as the intergenerational wealth transfer beginning to take place- estimates now predict $12 to $15 trillion in the next 20 years- and the growth of personal wealth generated by the economy of the past decade bring into clear relief the opportunity and, we argue, the need to promote philanthropy as actively as possible. With more than five million millionaires and 350,000 deca-millionaires in the U.S., and with a concentration of wealth greater than at any time in our national history, if ever there were a time to capture, nurture and direct a significant portion of this wealth into philanthropic channels, that time is now.
