FAQ
When was TPI established? TPI was founded in 1989 by H. Peter Karoff.
Does TPI help nonprofits with funding or match agencies with donors? TPI is not a grantmaker. We help clients develop strategic giving plans and sometimes design and manage their programmatic initiatives. We do not, however, direct clients toward specific nonprofits or funding opportunities. We are happy to receive general information from nonprofits about their programs to keep in our files for clients who express interest in learning about programs in a particular area.
How do I join TPI's mailing list? If you would like to receive the TPI Takeaway as well as periodic emails from TPI alerting you to new resources, publications and events valuable to donors please provide your contact information through our E-News Sign Up.
Who are TPI's clients? TPI works with individual donors, families, foundations, corporations and financial institutions. Many of TPI's valued individual and family clients are of course confidential, but some of our corporate clients over the years have included AOL, Time Warner, Lucent Technologies, CVS/pharmacy, Putnam Investments, Walt Disney Company, Reebok, Polaroid, and Boston Scientific Corporation. Large foundations we have worked with include the Ford Foundation, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Rhode Island Foundation, American Legacy Foundation, Packard Foundation, and Annie E. Casey Foundation. In what Programmatic areas does TPI have experience? TPI's clients have a broad range of interests and concerns. As a result, TPI has conducted research and developed philanthropic strategies to address a wide variety of social issues. Our programmatic work has been in the areas of K-12 school improvement, health and medical research, issues facing youth and families, fostering understanding and tolerance, housing and homelessness, community and economic development, environmental issues, and the arts. What are some of the important lessons TPI has learned about making a difference with philanthropy?
- Philanthropy is fundamentally an expression of values. Giving should reflect what is best about a family, a company or an institution.
- Focusing on an area that a donor cares about passionately can increase both the meaning and the impact of the funding.
Keeping the decision making simple and consensus-oriented smoothes the process.
- High impact donors constantly seek to build on the due diligence of others, leverage their giving, refine strategies over time and develop a collegial approach to solving problems.
- As in all endeavors, taking risks can sometimes lead to great breakthroughs.
- Measuring the impact of giving is important in accomplishing intended results.
- When donors work in close partnership with funding recipients, the relationship can be much more productive over time than when donors simply write checks and hope for the best.
- Small grants can be very effective when targeted at the right level.
